The City of Providence named the design submission by Christine Malecki West, AIA of KITE as a winner of their 2008 Sustainable Housing Competition. The honor was accompanied by a $5,000 prize.
The intent of the competition was to provide model homes that may be built on typical building lots throughout Providence. Builders may pay a nominal royalty and in return may use construction documents for the winning homes provided through the City Planning office and guidance on details and building materials that meet LEED-Homes criteria for green building, Energy Star Homes Certification, as well as Rhode Island Housing standards.
Christine's winning entry for an Affordable Single-Family house is modeled on Victorian homes found throughout Providence, and features an entry tower that gives the house a unique identity and encourages vertical air circulation to avoid air conditioning. The compact size and numerous 'common-sense' features such as high-grade insulation help make it both "green" and affordable to build and maintain.
Thanks go to the Providence Department of Planning and Development and Mayor David Cicilline for their leadership and vision, and to the dedicated jury for their thoughtful deliberations. Congratulations also go to other winners Robert Swinburn, AIA and especially to Ron Henderson, AIA of L+A Landscape Architecture, a frequent collaborator with KITE on projects such as Kingstown Crossings and the Narragansett Bay Commission.
